Special Lunchtime Conversation: Is this a ‘Bonhoeffer Moment’?
In his 1939 book Life Together Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, "Without Christ there is discord between God and man and between man and man . . . Christ opened up the way to God and to our brother." While he wrote this at a time in Germany when levels of discord were arguably greater than in our current American context, the great injustices visible in the United States have some wondering, "Is this a Bonhoeffer moment?"

In asking this question, further questions arise:
1. What would such a moment mean for the church when white Christians overwhelmingly supported the current President? How can Bonhoeffer's proposition that Christ reduces discord be true?
2. Does "Bonhoeffer moment" imply that conditions are becoming serious enough to warrant violence to prevent much greater violence?
In short, what do Letters and Papers from Prison and Life Together offer us in thinking through our present situation?
