Daniel José Camacho is a Contributing Opinion Writer at The Guardian U.S. He writes mostly about politics and religion. His articles have appeared in Christian Century, Religion Dispatches, Sojourners, Duke Magazine, and TIME, and his commentary has appeared in the New York Times.
Born to Colombian immigrants and raised in Uniondale, New York, Daniel graduated from Calvin College with a B.A. in Philosophy. In 2017, he graduated from Duke Divinity School with a Masters of Divinity. At both schools, he got involved deeply in student activism. Daniel has worked in multiple Christian congregations, at the Long Island civil rights non-profit ERASE Racism, and in Student Affairs offices such as the Center for Multicultural Affairs at Duke University. In September 2016, he participated in a peace delegation to Colombia to learn more about the armed conflict, the impact of U.S. foreign policies, and the ongoing peace process. In addition to writing, he has presented academic papers at Princeton Theological Seminary, UNC-Chapel Hill, Rutgers University, and Fordham University, and he has presented at local churches on the topics of racism and peace. In December 2016, Christian Century started hosting Daniel’s new blog, “Practicing Liberation.”
